These whole class reading sessions aim to develop children’s comprehension skills when reading a range of texts related to Buddhsim. The three sessions include everything needed for whole class reading sessions on: -The Story of the Buddha; -Buddhist Monks and Worship (non-fiction text); -Buddhist Stories of Anger and Patience. The extracts/ texts needed for each session are included, in addition to a colourful, step-by-step PowerPoint presentation to guide you through each session. Each session contains a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. There is also a vocabulary check immediately after each extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The sessions are best suited for children in KS2, although with minor adaptations they could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups.

Each session focuses on a different feature of ‘being wise’: Seeking Help Dealing with Hazards Collaborating Each session follows a similar structure for developing children’s knowledge and understanding: -Gathering: bringing the worship together, thinking about the key themes and vocabulary; -Engaging: Using a variety of strategies to engage the children in the main idea, before linking the theme to different stories and quotes from the Bible (with a range of discussion opportunities); -Reflecting: Relating the key ideas to a modern context and the lives of the children, thinking about what has been learnt and can be applied; -Sending: Opportunities for linked song and prayer.
